Honouring Sir Edmund Hillary
July 2019 marked 100 years since the birth of Sir Edmund Hillary, New Zealand’s world-famous mountaineer, adventurer and philanthropist.
Sir Edmund Hillary discovered mountain climbing as a schoolboy, honing his skills on the South Island’s Aoraki Mt Cook before summiting Mt Everest with his climbing partner Tenzing Norgay in 1953. In honour of his sporting and philanthropic achievements we have created a tribute to him in Domestic Arrivals. It’s inspired by a section of the Mt Everest climb called The Hillary Step, a near vertical rock step in the knife-edged ridge just below the summit.
