Protecting our most precious resource
Christchurch Airport sits above an alluvial fan and groundwater aquifer which supplies the city's drinking water. This groundwater system also provides the airport's water requirements, including public drinking water and an energy source for air conditioning.

It is our highest environmental priority to protect the quality and quantity of this precious resource. We work to maintain its integrity, avoid accidental contamination and minimise use of this resource as it passes under the airport. By doing so, we ensure water supply safety and security, protect the aquifer, reduce costs and protect the health of our city, region and island.
All stormwater at the airport ultimately discharges into the ground. These discharges are regulated under the Resource Management Act by Environment Canterbury (ECan). ECan issues resource consents which set out specific requirements for our stormwater catchment and systems.
Our water priorities
Aquifier management
- Ensure the quality of stormwater discharged
- Comply with stormwater consents
- Set standards for new developments
- Highlight aquifer sensitivity to tenants and the public.
Potable groundwater takes
- Maximise efficiency from water takes
- Harness the energy potential of groundwater.
